Credit cards are the safest and most convenient way to pay for expenses while on vacation, but they can be and do get stolen.

When someone is looking for a good place to grab onto another’s credit card, they often choose a very heavily populated vacation spot; so protect yourself before leaving to go on vacation this year.

If it is your regular practice to carry numerous credit cards, the first thing to do is to pare down your assortment.

Go through all of the cards to find out which ones have the largest credit line, the most credit still available and the lowest interest rate on purchases. Choose only two cards to carry and if one card is lost you’ll have a back-up card; and then on arrival at your destination, put your back up card in the hotel safe or the in-room safe.

If you have a home safe, put the other cards in it while you’re away; if not, consider storing them in a safe deposit box at the bank. Wary burglars often notice when a home is unoccupied and decide it is prime territory for the taking, so do not leave credit or bank cards in your desk drawer or kitchen cabinet, where they are easy to find.

Record the contact information on your credit card issuers and place it in your luggage where it will be safe. Vacationing can get a bit stressful, if a purse or wallet or suitcase is misplaced and it will help ease the tension if there are additional copies on the information available somewhere else.

Unless you immediately report that the card is missing, you might have to show proof that you didn’t enjoy that meal at a 4-Star Restaurant or purchase that ,000 necklace.

If an unusually high amount of activity is showing on your card’s account, some credit card issuers will put red flags on it, so you would be wise to inform them of any plans you have for vacation, including where you intend to go and how long you may be gone. If you fail to do this, they could put a freeze on charges if they can’t reach anyone at your home to verify that the charges are legitimate.

If you make the purchase of an item while on vacation and the item is stolen, you can get a credit on your account by notifying your card issuer of this, since many card issuers offer theft and loss protection as a second benefit of using your credit card for vacation purchases.

If you have had the experience of ordering merchandise and not receiving it as scheduled or not at all or if it was damaged when you received it and it was a credit card purchase, the complaints you have can be handled more easily.

If you are traveling, you can get in on some fun adventures that could tire you out, stress you out and tap you out, however, if you keep good track of your expenses with credit cards you will have a better idea when to stop the adventure seeking.
